What is the purpose of a consultation?
The aim of the repeated consultation is to evaluate description of the prostate MRI scan for correctness of the protocol and conformance of technical parameters of the equipment used during the original scan to the international guidelines for MRI scans.
A correct diagnosis of prostate cancer is a very important part of the cancer diagnostic process, necessary to make a decision for further treatment.
What does the consultation of the MRI scan result involve?
During consultation of the prostate MRI scan a radiology specialist considers three basic techniques for comprehensive evaluation of pathological lesions:
- Gland morphology;
- Tissue density assessment based on a nature of water diffusion through the tissue (DWI);
- Evaluation of newly developed vessels based on foci enhancement following administration of a contrast agent (perfusion).
The foci are then assigned a score according to the international PI-RADS scale, on a basis of images from the above sequences, marked in files and transferred to an urologist who performs a targeted prostate biopsy for the said foci.
Quality and technical sophistication of diagnostic equipment is of utmost importance for assessment and reliability of description of prostate cancer stage.
The team of specialists at HIFU CLINIC Prostate Cancer Treatment Centre and medical equipment used to perform examinations meet international criteria specified by the European Society of Urology (ESUR).
Who is the consultation of the MRI scan result intended for?
Only a few radiologists in Poland specialise in evaluation of the MRI scan of the prostate, therefore, frequently, descriptions of scans delivered to the HIFU CLINIC Prostate Cancer Treatment Centre for qualification for a biopsy or treatment are of poor value and require reassessment. Sometimes, the protocol of the scan itself is not optimal for the prostate evaluation, and the whole scan must be repeated. In our centre we cooperate with radiologists specialising in prostate evaluation. This ensures even more precise diagnostics, and is a very important component of qualification for a relevant prostate cancer treatment method.
