Specialists from Lyon Hospital in France compared HIFU method with external beam radiotherapy (ERBT)
190 patients with comparable PSA test results and Gleason score before a treatment were involved to the study. Patients were treated between 2000 and 2005.
The five-year progression-free survival rate did not differ significantly in the follow-up after HIFU method or external beam radiotherapy (EBRT).
Implementation of the palliative hormone therapy was considerably more frequent in patients treated with ERBT, which indicates the advantage of HIFU method in prostate cancer treatment.
After seven years of follow-up parameters of survival specific for the disease and survival free of metastases 87%, 100%, 100 % for HIFU i 99%, 100% i 98% and EBRT (p=0.043, 0.932, 0.941).
