WHOLE-BODY MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

What isRezonans magnetyczny całego ciała (whole body MRI) whole-body magnetic resonance imaging ?

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (whole-body MRI or wbMRI) is a screening test using magnetic resonance

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (wbMRI) provides good images of musculoskeletal and nervous systems, of organs in the chest, abdominal cavity, pelvis, as well as of blood vessels.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging brings about revolutionary changes in diagnostics as it is harmless to the Patient, with similar, if not better determination of metastatic lesions in Patients with high-risk prostate cancer.

What is the purpose of this scan?

In the prostate cancer diagnostic, whole-body magnetic resonance imaging has two applications. First - it is used to search for metastatic foci in bones. Nowadays it is said that this scan, instead of bone scintigraphy or SPECT/CT, gives similar, if not better, results. Second - in prostate cancer, whole-body magnetic resonance imaging is used to search for enlarged lymph nodes. It is important, because scintigraphy, computed tomography, SPECT/CT or PET require use of ionising radiation which is harmful to health, and this is not the case with wbMRI scan.

What does this examination involve?

The standard scan is performed as T1- and T2-weighed images and Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI), to locate lesions and evaluate their characteristics. Up to 3000 thousand images are taken during the scan, in various sequences and projections. The scan takes over an hour, so detailed evaluation of many organs is possible.

Who is this scan for?

This method is used in Patients at an early screening for metastatic lesions and in musculoskeletal disorders. Additionally, it is a safe and non-invasive method for assessment of general health condition, enabling everybody to assess their health.

How is whole-body magnetic resonance imaging performed?

The scan does not require the Patient to be prepared in any way, and is performed without a contrast agent.
