Additional information

Self-esteem of men suffering with prostate cancer is significantly decreased, and majority of them are overly critical of themselves. When prostate cancer treatment is completed, men easily focus on this part of their body that was attacked by cancer, and its functionality changed by that disease.

It is important to provide the patient with feedback on a time required to recover after treatment for prostate cancer is completed. He also should be provided with complete information on methods for coping with sexual dysfunctions, and with an option to consult specialists to determine causes underlying sexual dysfunctions. A feedback that correct diagnosis will help in selection of effective treatment for sexual dysfunctions is also very helpful in the treatment process.

In men treatment of prostate cancer may result in sexual dysfunctions including:

  • erectile dysfunctions;
  • anorgasmia;
  • pain during intercourse
  • anejaculation;
  • reduced intensity of orgasms or their complete lack.

Those dysfunctions may be a consequence of prostate cancer treatment. Many sexual dysfunctions resulting from prostate cancer treatment are of temporary nature, but some changes are irreversible.

In consequence of such changes, sexual attractiveness may be perceived through one's appearance, and sexual performance. Often, very important values, like maturity, goodness, personality or sense of humour of a given person are overlooked.

Cancer diagnosis stimulates many Patients to initiate activities to cure this disease. It is a long process, involving many changes in priorities: health, family, work, sex, money.

Many questions arise regarding quality of life and sexual performance during prostate cancer treatment and after its completion. Emotions associated with sexual activity affect patient's mood, his joy of life, self-esteem, security, relations with his partner, and emotional control. Sexuality is a very important aspect of one's life which, unfortunately, is frequently overlooked in men treated for cancer, both by doctors and by patients themselves.

Who should attend a sexological consultation?

It is intended for Patients who completed their treatment for prostate cancer. It is important to provide the patient with feedback on a time required for full recovery. The Patient should also be provided with complete information on methods for coping with sexual dysfunctions, and with an option to consult specialists to determine causes underlying sexual dysfunctions. A feedback that correct diagnosis will help in selection of effective treatment for sexual dysfunctions is also very helpful in the treatment process.

The most important issue is for the patient to be aware that, regardless of the treatment’s effect on his sexual performance, tenderness, openness and closeness between partners is always possible. With a strong support of his partner and using professional assistance there is a very high chance for active sex life.
