What does Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy involve?
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) is a method for treatment of locally advanced prostate cancer (non-metastatic) in which the whole prostate gland is removed, in some cases together with lymph nodes, through few small incisions in the abdominal skin, through which a laparoscopic camera and other laparoscopic instruments are introduced.
The procedure is usually performed in a way preserving nervous and vascular systems responsible for erection; therefore, quality of patient's sex life is not affected.
What is the purpose of the LRP therapy?
The aim of the LRP therapy is to prevent further development of the disease through prostate resection.
How is laparoscopic radical prostatectomy performed?
One day before the procedure the patient is consulted and undergoes anaesthesiological examinations. The procedure normally takes from 2.5 to 3.5 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. During laparoscopic radical prostatectomy a catheter is inserted, which remains in the bladder for some time after the procedure. Majority of patients treated with LRP are discharged from the hospital two or three days after the procedure, and daily activities are not a problem to them.
Who is the LRP procedure intended for?
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is intended for Patients with prostate cancer limited to the organ or locally advanced, without metastases to bones and soft tissues. Nearly all patients qualified for traditional prostatectomy may consider the laparoscopic procedure.
